More About Global Warming

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Scientists have already warned the world of the possible results of global warming some thirty years ago. After recent wars it is the biggest threat to our way of life. Due to the change of climate which is the result of global warming, destructive storms prevail, floods and landslides aggravate, sea level are rising, droughts affect crops and livestock production, glaciers are melting. These are some of the catastrophes brought about which need speedy solutions and a strong resolve to cope with the situation. But have we done anything to rectify the problem? Do we allow it to carry on without fighting it?

This cooperation of government with its citizens and companies and with other countries should aim to grow research and experimentation on the long term effect of climate change. How will it affect our rain forests and the world’s major bodies of water like the lakes, rivers, oceans, and the livelihood of people who are depending on them. Addressing all such environmental issues is desperately needed to tackle the effect of global warming. We need to start reducing carbon emission and emission of other greenhouse gases, teach people about climate change issues and what practical solutions are feasible.

Each country has to map out of how much carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases it produces and emits into the atmosphere and in the same way it has to decide how much greening of the environment through reforestation in the rural areas and planting of plants and trees in urban areas is needed to neutralize these harmful gases emitted into the air. Once these gases are in the atmosphere, they stay there for a long time thus trapping the heat in the lower atmosphere and radiating some of it back to earth. With huge amount of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere it would increase the global surface temperature.

Through environmental awareness, every person can contribute in his own little way to combat global warming. Every little thing you can do at home in the use of gas emitting equipment or vehicles will help. You need to minimize their use if you cannot totally avoid them. Any equipment or vehicle using oil and gas produces carbon dioxide. Greenhouse gas is emitted by compressor-run equipment like airconditioning units, refrigeration and freezing units, etc. which need to be reduced because of the effect it can bring to our ozone layer. These gases are the most devastating global warming gases which remain in the atmosphere for a long time. Energy efficient appliances should be encouraged and by saving energy help reduce gas emission of power plant generators generating electricity.

Importance of Agriculture

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

The idea of ‘food security’ is basically important, and for that cause, agriculture is important. The task of nourishing its people has been possibly the main concern of its rulers throughout history. As such, agriculture is measured to be the very basis of political and social steadiness of a nation since times immemorial. In addition, the agricultural division plays an important role in the sphere of given that large scale employment to people. Large and fairly large farms employ workers to undertake the various jobs relating to farming of crops and care of farm animals. In most of the countries of the world, agriculture still remains the biggest division responsible for the employing and feeding a large percentage of the population.

Agriculture is also important from the viewpoint of assessing the standard of a country’s development, based on the capability of its farmers. Poorly trained farmers cannot apply the higher methods and new technologies. The importance of science and technology in the development of agriculture is fairly clear from the words of Deng Xiaoping. The growth of agriculture depends primary on policy, and next on science. There is neither any limit to developments in science and technology, nor to the role that they can play in the field of agricultural growth’.

Agriculture is conventionally based on bulk manufacturing. Harvesting is done once a season, most of the times, and stocked and used later. In fact, some thinkers opine that people have begun to adopt ‘batch processing’ and ‘stocking’ in manufacturing, as a result of the practices from agricultural thinking. Before industrialization, people with the biggest stocks of food and other supplies were considered more stable, and they were able to face challenges of nature without having to starve. So important is the role of agriculture that new concepts keep ‘cropping up’ to give the traditional activity a modern turn. One such new idea the world is gibbering about these days is – the importance of ‘organic farming’. There is evidence that, apart from their numerous other benefits, organic farms are more sustainable and environmentally sound, giving agriculture a new measurement.

The importance of agricultural practices was further established when ‘Organic food’ began as a small movement decades ago, with gardeners and farmers refusing the use of conservative non-organic practices. With the growth of the Organic food market now outpacing much of the food industry, many big companies have ventured into it. With the emergence of multi-national companies, and with the creation of a legal certification structure such as the Soil Association, there is every hesitation that the very definition of natural food will change, making it more of a commercial activity than ever before!
